Madrid in Frames: Embracing Slow Living in the City

Madrid is a city bursting with color, rich in diversity, flavours, and mesmerizing art. It leaves a lasting impression, especially on those with a creative spirit, constantly revealing beautiful new corners with every stroll.

I’ve grown to love it more and more each day. When the initial thrill faded and everyday life set in, adjusting wasn’t always easy.

Like in any big city, one can easily get swept up in the rush. Amid the crowd, it’s not hard to feel overwhelmed.

But slowly, I’ve begun to discover my own little corners and places that invite me to pause, breathe, and take in the moment. These are just the first spots I’ve stumbled upon, but they’ve already helped me embrace Madrid’s slower rhythms and appreciate the beauty hidden within its chaos.

Here are some of those “cornes”:

1. Prado Museum Park

Just before the El Retiro Park, you’ll find the Prado Museum, Spain’s main national art museum. It’s a beautiful, quieter part of the city, where people take slow strolls, soak up the sun, and enjoy the charming, relaxed atmosphere.

Art stands appear in certain corners that invite you to pause and appreciate their aesthetics. Each walk there leaves me inspired.

2. Parque de la Montaña

As the name suggests, Parque de la Montaña (Mountain Park) really lives up to its promise. It gives you one of the most amazing views of the western side of Madrid. I love sitting here and watching the Royal Palace and its gardens stretch out below you. There’s something about this spot that makes you feel so connected to the city, but also far enough away to just breathe, slow down, and get lost in a good book. Honestly, it’s my little escape in the middle of the city chaos.

The park has such a great vibe, especially with the live music that fills the air. I love watching people sing and dance along to the buskers, completely in the moment. The park is wonderfully spacious, so you can find your own private spots. Yet, just a few steps away, you can dive into the lively energy of live music, singing, and dancing with people. It’s the perfect mix of peace, beautiful landscapes, and stunning views, while also being a place to connect with others and just feel present.

3. Aranjuez, Garden of the Island

For a more peaceful, picturesque escape, a 50-minute train ride from the city center delivers exactly that.

Aranjuez, Jardin de la Isla is an 18th-century garden that feels like stepping back in time.

I love wandering along the shady walkways lined with trees, taking my time and soaking it all in. The charming little bridges make me pause for a photo, and the sound of the fountains bubbling adds a special, relaxing atmosphere.

Along the neat green lawns, you might be pleasantly surprised by an elegant peacock showing off, appearing just in time to make the scene feel even more picturesque.

4. Mansilla Libros y Café, Coffee Shop

It’s essential to find a coffee shop that brings you a sense of peace and satisfaction. Somewhere you can sink into a comfy spot, enjoy the aesthetics, and receive friendly service. Pairing that with a good book makes for the perfect slow-down moment.

Madrid has a few book-and-coffee spots made for exactly that. I recently discovered one that made me want to slow down and never leave.

In one of the corners of Lavapiés sits a coffee shop called Mansilla Libros y Café. Its charming atmosphere, warm tones, and instrumental music invite you to sink into the space and get cozy with a good book.

Spending time here makes you forget the rush of the city outside, letting you slow down and savor the moment.

5. Bookstores on Cuesta de Moyano

Right next to the Royal Botanical Garden, walking to El Retiro Park, you’ll find Cuesta de Moyano—a charming little pedestrian street lined with secondhand bookstalls.

You’ll have the chance to browse through a wide variety of books, from old classics to newer editions.

Many stalls have great offers, and the best part is the relaxed atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, wander between the shelves, and flip through the pages.

If you’re a book lover, this spot is an absolute must!

✎ᝰ. Today’s Note: Each of these places offers a little pause from the city’s rhythm, moments to slow down and soak in your surroundings. Madrid has countless treasures waiting to be discovered. While some, like El Retiro Park or Parque de la Montaña, may be the city’s most well-known quiet spots, they are just the first few places I’ve come across as I explore. There’s so much more to uncover, and I look forward to sharing more hidden corners as I go. If you ever find yourself here, I hope you’ll also take the time to wander slowly and soak up the little moments.
